This site collects very little, and nothing is sold or shared for advertising. Here’s what it collects and why.

What this site collects

If you use the contact form, it collects your name, your email address, the topic you pick, and your message. That goes to my inbox so I can reply.

If you subscribe to Field Notes, your email address goes to Substack, which runs the newsletter. Substack’s privacy policy covers what it does with it, and every issue has an unsubscribe link.

The site is hosted on WordPress.com, which keeps basic visit statistics, like which pages get viewed, and screens contact form messages for spam. Automattic’s privacy policy covers how it handles that information.

Some pages include videos from YouTube or Vimeo. Those services may collect information, including through cookies, when you play a video, under their own privacy policies.

What I do with it

I use your contact details only to reply to you. I don’t sell, rent, or trade anyone’s information, and there’s no advertising on this site.

How long it’s kept

Messages from the contact form stay in my email and the site’s form records for as long as they’re useful for our conversation or my business records. If you’d like yours deleted, ask and I’ll delete it.

Your choices

You can ask to see or delete anything you’ve sent me by writing through the contact page. You can leave Field Notes at any time with the unsubscribe link at the bottom of every issue.

Other sites

This site links to booksellers, tools, and other websites. Once you leave, their privacy policies apply.

Children

This site isn’t directed at children under 13, and I don’t knowingly collect their information.

If anything here changes, I’ll update this page. Last updated September 2026.
